When it comes to Colors of the Year, many brands hit the wrong note with what the average homeowner might use. And while Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog popped up a few years ago as the COTY of 2022, in 2024 it’s STILL GOING STRONG.

What type of paint color is Evergreen Fog? Is it warm or cool?
Evergreen Fog is a green paint color (I’m not just good looks, you know). HOWEVER, not every green is created equal…
- WARM GREEN – green with a yellow undertone
- COOL GREEN – green with a cool undertone
The neat thing about Evergreen Fog is that it kind of hovers in the middle. For example, if it were a cool green paint color, it would look better with this rug (which has a cool green in it)…
However, as it is, it’s a bit too warm looking for the above rug’s temperature and intensity. This being said, it’s nowhere near olive green, which is a warm shade of green. Many people would call Evergreen Fog a ‘slightly more grayed-out’ sage green.
One of the great things about Evergreen Fog is that whether your room is north-facing, south-facing, east, or west, it holds its hue very well. This means that even in northern light (shown above) or eastern light, it doesn’t lean into blue. As for southern or afternoon western light, you can expect it to warm up without leaning hard into green-yellow.

With an LRV of 30, Evergreen Fog can hold its color QUITE well in an overly bright room. On the other hand, while it will look that bit darker in a room without adequate light, it has enough chroma/color to rise and show its true colors (whereas colors with more gray in them could fall flat)

As you learned earlier, Evergreen Fog is a pretty darn flexible shade of green as it doesn’t cater to green-yellow (warm) or green-blue (cool). However, what it DOES cater to is gray. The gray in Evergreen Fog calms it down, leaving a more muted, earth-toned approach to green.
Really, the green-gray of Evergreen Fog is one of the reasons why it’s such a popular shade. While some green hues can come across as a little too strong, the gray in Evergreen Fog helps calm it down while leaving a glorious green on your walls – even Kermit would approve.

What’s the best white paint color for trims or cabinets with Evergreen Fog?
GREAT question! So many people don’t consider their trim or cabinets when choosing a color like Evergreen Fog. And while it’s QUITE flexible, there are a few things to consider…
- The warmer your white is, the more yellow it can look ‘in comparison’ to Evergreen Fog. This means that your previously muted-looking white could look surprisingly colorful when partnered with a green hue like this.
- Evergreen Fog suits MANY warm whites, but for the above reason, leans into those with a more muted approach, such as Sherwin Williams Pure White, Alabaster, and Benjamin Moore White Dove.
- While Evergreen Fog can handle some cool whites (i.e., Extra White), it prefers a WHITER white like Sherwin Williams High Reflective White or Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace (fave).
IS EVERGREEN FOG A GOOD EXTERIOR PAINT COLOR?
Green can be tricky as it doesn’t always jibe with brick, stonework, and roof colors. This doesn’t mean it won’t work with YOURS, but make sure that green is a NATURAL choice for your home in that it already exists (i.e., in the roof) or contrasts/complements any features (i.e., brick or stone).
If there were to be a medium-toned green that would look lovely on the outside of your home, I BET Evergreen Fog would be it. However, like this next exterior, grays or greiges with green undertones are more common than moderate greens like Evergreen Fog…

I LOVE the idea of Evergreen Fog on kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanity. Is it going to happen? While current trends lean into darker shades of green and more obvious green-blue blends, I can totally see Evergreen Fog making its mark on the cabinet world.
Why?
Evergreen Fog looks WAY more blue-green than usual in the above kitchen.
Evergreen Fog has enough COLOR (chroma) to step out of the neutral range, but not so much that it’s overwhelming or SHOCKINGLY green. The depth of it (LRV) is also a nice look for those not as inspired by the darker end of things.

Evergreen Fog is pretty unique, and few colors are up to par with it. If you’re looking for a green that’s a touch grayer, greener, lighter, or darker, I’ve got a few more for you to compare with Evergreen Fog.
EVERGREEN FOG vs ACACIA HAZE
These are two great colors as they’re similar in many ways, with a few defining features. Evergreen Fog is a relatively ‘neutral’ shade of green as it’s not hardcore green-blue or green-yellow. Acacia Haze is a cool green as it tips into green-blue. Comparing these helps you see that shift. Evergreen Fog is also a touch darker and has a bit (but not much) more color than Acacia Haze.

Ahhhh, the two giants in the wild world of green! While comparing these two might seem like a good idea, they come at green in different ways and possibly won’t suit the same project because of this.
October Mist has an LRV of 46, making it considerably lighter than Evergreen Fog. October Mist is also a slightly warm green, making Evergreen Fog look cooler in comparison.

WHAT COLORS GO WITH EVERGREEN FOG?
One of the MANY things I love about Evergreen Fog is its openness to coordinating colors. Whereas some other greens are too COLORFUL to be flexible and others have too much gray in them to really be GREEN, Evergreen Fog is the perfect blend, allowing for a wide range of partners – just like me. JUST JOKING!!!!!
- Some subtle greiges, such as Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray, can work, but I would avoid a color with any MORE violet undertone.
- Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige and Aesthetic White are GLORIOUS with this particular green.
- Muted off-white paint colors like Sherwin Williams White Duck help slow the energy down in a room and let Evergreen Fog be the star of the show.
- Soft, warm whites and bright whites look great with Evergreen Fog.
- If you’re looking for a bit more COLOR in your palette, be careful, as you don’t want to COMPETE with Evergreen Fog. Look for different hues (i.e., blue/violet) with similar or slightly lower GRAY levels (Sherwin Williams are pretty).
