Ask any public defender in the LA criminal courts to name the most complicated and heart-wrenching case in the past decade and almost everyone will tell you it’s The People vs. David Martinez. Ask the prosecutors and they’ll admit the case is tragic. But complicated? No. They say it’s murder plain and simple.
There is no dispute that Officer Shaun Diamond was a man of good character whose death is horrific … or that David Martinez was affiliated with a motorcycle club that had conflicts with law enforcement. But Night Raid avoids a rush to judgment and considers all aspects of a very murky case. And in the process explores our own prejudices and preconceptions about cause and effect, guilt and innocence … even punishment and redemption.
There are no videos of the raid and David Martinez isn’t an ACLU poster boy. He’s a family man with vices that may have contributed to the shotgun blast that killed Diamond on the night of October 28, 2014. In the eight episodes of Night Raid, we unravel the compelling story of The People vs. David Martinez - not just the events of David’s two trials but the reasons for the SWAT raid and the planning behind it, the relationship between David and the Mongols Motorcycle Club, and how the intertwined narratives of this story reflect larger issues in our judicial system. The series takes an intimate look at Diamond’s death through unprecedented access to search warrant materials and recordings of detective interviews with David’s family and other Pomona SWAT officers.

Night Raid is a production of Crime Story Media and eOne Entertainment. The podcast debuts on LAist 89.3 on Saturday May 6 at 2pm with a rebroadcast on Sunday May 7 at 7pm. Each episode of the eight part Night Raid special series will air Saturday’s at 2pm and rebroadcast Sunday at 7pm. The first episode of the podcast will be released on all podcast players after the second LAist broadcast on May 7, with new episodes airing each Sunday thereafter.
The eight episode Night Raid series will conclude its run on the weekend of June 24.

Ludovic Collet: la voix du trail. Il est le speaker emblématique de l’Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, du Grand Raid de La Réunion et de nombreux autres événements. Il gravite depuis plus de 20ans dans le monde du trail.
Sabine Ehrström: la Doc. C’est la scientifique de la bande. Elle possède un doctorat en Sciences du mouvement humain et s’est spécialisée dans le trail running. Elle enseigne la biomécanique à l’université. Elle est aussi traileuse élite (4e des championnats de France de trail 2021), coach et féministe.
Corinne Favre: la pionnière du trail et du ski alpinisme. C’est l’une des athlètes françaises comptant le plus grand nombre de victoires dans les deux disciplines. À son palmarès vertigineux, on peut notamment retenir une victoire à la CCC — au classem*nt général —, un Grand Trail des Templiers, trois Diagonales des fous et treize 6000D. Elle est championne du monde 2022 de ski alpinisme dans sa catégorie.
Ugo Ferrari: le Duc de Savoie autoproclamé. Il est ultra-traileur, organisateur du Trail Nivolet Revard, speaker sur les événements de trail et podcasteur (Traileur dévergondé).
Marianne Hogan : la championne du trail québécois à la voix et au rire reconnaissables entre 1000. Elle a débuté le trail au Colorado après une carrière d’athlète universitaire à San Diego (10000 m sur piste et cross country). Elle est également guide en paratriathlon pour l’équipe du Canada. À l’été 2022, elle a enchaîné deux performances de haute volée à la Western States (3e) puis à l’UTMB (2e).
Blandine L'hirondel: la double championne du monde de trail. Médecin gynécologue obstétricienne, l’athlète normande a notamment remporté, dès sa première participation, l’OCC en 2021 et la CCC en 2022 et elle sera sur la ligne de départ de l’UTMB 2023 pour compléter sa collection.
Thomas Lorblanchet: le premier champion du monde de trail de l’histoire. Il est quadruple vainqueur des Templiers, mais aussi le seul Européen à avoir remporté l’emblématique Leadville 100 aux États-Unis. Il est aujourd’hui ostéopathe, kinésithérapeute, coach et team manager de l’équipe élite Asics.
Nicolas Martin: le pilier de l'équipe de France de trail. Vice-champion du monde 2022 pour la deuxième fois de sa carrière, il compte plus d’une centaine de courses à son actif. Il est également coach de trail.
Florence Morisseau: la prof. Elle est kinésithérapeute et forme les kinés, les ostéos, les podos et les coachs à la prévention et au traitement des blessures en course à pied. Elle a suivi de nombreux athlètes de haut niveau durant sa carrière. C’est l’un des visages de La Clinique du Coureur en France. Elle est aussi ultra-traileuse, avec entre autres deux victoires à l’Ultra-Marin à son actif.
Fiona Porte: la montagnarde fougueuse. Traileuse et skieuse-alpiniste de Briançon, dans les Hautes-Alpes, elle a été vice-championne de France de course en montagne en 2010. Elle a remporté à cette époque la mythique Montée du Nid d'Aigle, la 6000D ou encore le Marathon des Causses. Après un passage à vide de plusieurs années, elle est revenue aux affaires avec une victoire au 86 km du Grand Trail de Serre-Ponçon en 2021 puis une 3e place au Marathon de la MaxiRace d’Annecy et au Grand Trail des Templiers. Elle enseigne le renforcement musculaire selon la méthode De Gasquet.
Robin Schmitt: le trublion du trail. C’est le père du phénomène hilarant Les Genoux dans le GIF et de la revue annuelle Point de Côté. Il connaît tout du trail et de son histoire qu’il passe quotidiennement à la moulinette. Sur les sentiers, il est spécialiste du kilomètre vertical.
