  • Hello, blog readers! My name is Biba and I’m a fourth-year at Oberlin. I’m majoring in art history and minoring in comparative literature. I’m from Santa Barbara, California. I really enjoy working with kids in the Oberlin community. I’m a cochair of Girls in Motion, a mentorship program that encourages body positivity and empowerment for young girls through dance. I also teach creative writing to incarcerated youth with the Writers in Residence Program. When I’m not working with kids, I love giving tours at the Allen Memorial Art Museum or brewing coffee at Azariah’s (the on-campus coffee shop)! When I’m not working, mentoring, or studying, you’ll find me painting in the grass, perhaps with a gallon of chocolate milk and a few friends. I love kite-flying, journaling, eating spectacular food, and finding out about music I’ve never heard of. I’ll climb an odd tree, or try striking a conversation in French with a fluent speaker. Though I’m not very good at running, I do it all the time, and once in a while when inspiration strikes suddenly, I sometimes write beautiful poems. I’m excited to share my Oberlin experience! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out. As an incoming student, I loved reading the blogs and I hope my writing can shed some light on the amazing experiences I’ve had at Oberlin so far. Happy reading!

  • Hello prospies! My name is Alice Ollstein and I'm a senior at Oberlin College double-majoring in English and Latin American Studies. I've taken lots of fun, challenging classes in tons of different departments and I hope to continue to do so in my remaining time at this wonderful place.I'm a proud member of Keep Co-op, where besides cooking and cleaning, I serve as Coordinator of the Nicaragua Sister Partnership Committee, which facilitates our connection with and support of a group of impoverished female farmers in northern Nicaragua. This January, I will lead a school-sponsored delegation of co-op members to live with these farmers in Nicaragua and develop our relationship with them.I came to Oberlin from a big public high school in Santa Monica, California, so the weather and culture here in Ohio were somewhat of a shock, but in general I've loved every minute of my time here. If you have any questions about journalism, activism, the campus environmental movement, co-ops, making friends or anything else, please feel free to comment on my blog. I hope to hear from you soon!

  • It’s like we have our own ecosystem; a way of life that differs greatly from surrounding communities. Oberlin is certainly not perfect. But, it does have advantages. For example, I like living in a town that is trying to be “local.” In general, there’s a real effort to shop and support our own community. I used to run in the mornings (before P! 90! X!, that is. More on that later.) On trash day, I saw way more Lorenzo's pizza boxes than others. Of course, it's no surprise. It's good pizza. (Full disclosure: my son works there. I’m disclosing this fact so that you’ll tip Jake when he hands you the next pizza box.)

  • What’s up, I’m Tim. I’m an Economics major, a member of the Oberlin Track and Field team, a Wide Receiver on the football team, a published author, as well as a Ninde Scholar, but most importantly....... I’m busy! I’m not saying this as a bad thing, though, because college is the time in your life that you are supposed to pursue your goals and ambitions and I’m going to pursue them to the fullest. Throughout my life I have lived in nine different states, but I’m not going to bore you with them here. The places that influenced me the most were Broward County, Florida, and Baltimore, Maryland. Find me in Mudd library, where I’m either working on my homework or talking when I should be working on my homework. By next year I hope to be a TA or an OWL for an economics class, so I really should be doing more of the former. In my free time, I like to write and I am currently working on my second book. If you see me around campus give me a random word and I’ll write you a story on the spot!
